Visit to Water Treatment Plant

Joe and Dan’s dad Gerry kindly arranged for our class to visit the west Clare water treatment facility at Mullagh last week. We travelled there in cars through the fog and some students thought we were lost in the wilds!

We got a great reception from the staff there, especially Noreen, Pat and Christy. Noreen showed us around, assisted by Pat, and explained all the scientific processes involved. The lake water is first cleaned in the complex filtration process and then chemicals are added to balance the pH and make it totally fit for human consumption. Some students thought that parts of it was like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory in places !

The treatment plant is in operation 24/7 and has a generator which will kick in if there is a power cut. It provides water to all of west Clare, right back to Loop Head.
