Walking Bus

Our school Walking Bus departs every morning at 8:30am from Éire Óg GAA grounds. With the fine weather in recent days, the numbers of pupils joining the Walking Bus has increased to a daily average of 70 pupils, joined by parents and volunteers. We are very appreciative of the efforts of Mr Ken Hickey for his daily commitment to the Walking Bus.

Why Walk to School?

Walking to school every day brings real benefits for our pupils across a number of areas:

For health: Regular walking supports physical fitness and helps children arrive at school alert, energised, and ready to learn. Even a short walk each morning makes a meaningful contribution to a child’s daily activity levels.

For social development: One of the most enjoyable aspects of the Walking Bus is the opportunity it gives pupils from different classes and year groups to walk and chat together. These connections across age groups are a natural and valuable part of school life.

For our environment: Every family that joins the Walking Bus is one fewer car idling in traffic on the approach to school and exiting onto the Kilrush Road. Reducing congestion around our school grounds makes the journey safer for everyone and reduces our collective carbon footprint.

Our Commitment to Climate Action

At Ennis NS, we are committed to embedding climate awareness into the life of our school. Our involvement in the international PROTECT Erasmus+ project on climate change with schools in Ireland, Portugal, Croatia, Norway and Serbia reflects this ongoing commitment. The Walking Bus is a practical and visible expression of those values in our everyday school routine.
