St Brigid

At Ennis National School, pupils have been taking part in a large-scale collaborative art project that encourages them to explore how creativity can be used to share ideas, tell stories, and reflect on the world around them. The initiative has given children the opportunity to work together, take risks in their thinking, and develop a strong sense of pride and ownership in their work.

The response from the pupils has been overwhelmingly positive. Many chose to spend their free time continuing their pieces, highlighting just how motivated and invested they were in bringing their ideas to life. For the children, this was not simply an art lesson, but a meaningful opportunity to have their voices heard through colour, pattern, and imagery.

The centrepiece of the project is a large-scale portrait of St. Brigid, inspired by the distinctive style of Jim Fitzpatrick and painted by four 6th Class pupils — Jannat, Arno, Adam, and Katrina. Measuring 2 metres by 1 metre, the artwork now holds a prominent place within the school and has become a source of pride for pupils, staff, and families alike.

Fitzpatrick’s Celtic artwork has helped to foster pride in Irish culture and has played an important role in keeping traditional stories and legends alive for new generations.

Our Fitzpatrick-inspired piece, titled “St. Brigid,” was thoughtfully created by four talented pupils, each from a different faith background. Through their collaboration, the children demonstrated tolerance, acceptance, and mutual respect, reflecting the inclusive and welcoming values of our school.

Just as St. Brigid is a symbol of kindness, generosity, and unity, this artwork celebrates how people of all beliefs can come together through creativity, shared purpose, and respect.
